For over four decades, Dilmah has told the story of tea - of gardens tended with care, of flavour born from terroir, and of ethics steeped into every cup. Now, a new ingredient joins that story. One with roots that stretch back over 4,000 years.
We’re proud to introduce our new Ceylon Cinnamon Tea Infusions, a range inspired by one of Sri Lanka’s most precious natural treasures: Cinnamomum zeylanicum, or True Cinnamon.
What Is True Cinnamon?
Also known as Ceylon Cinnamon, this rare spice grows primarily in the southern lowlands of Sri Lanka. Unlike the common cassia cinnamon found in most supermarkets, True Ceylon Cinnamon is softer, sweeter, and rich in natural compounds that support wellbeing.
For millennia, it has been revered for its fragrance, taste, and therapeutic value. King Solomon is said to have sailed to Sri Lanka in 1000 BCE to trade silver for cinnamon. In the first century AD, 350 grams of Ceylon Cinnamon could fetch five kilograms of pure silver. It was an indispensable part of royal ceremonies in ancient Egypt, praised in Ayurvedic medicine, and valued by ancient Greek healers.
Even Marco Polo referred to Sri Lanka as the "Isle of Spices," recognising the unparalleled quality of Ceylon Cinnamon.
Health Benefits of Ceylon Cinnamon Tea
These blends offer more than just flavour - they’re grounded in wellness. Modern research and traditional wisdom both recognise the power of True Cinnamon:
-
Supports heart health and blood sugar balance, with studies showing potential to reduce cholesterol and aid insulin sensitivity.
-
Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds such as eugenol and cinnamaldehyde.
-
Promotes cognitive function, protecting neurons and supporting memory, with promising studies around Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
-
Aids digestion, especially when combined with peppermint and ginger.
-
May inhibit the growth of harmful cells, supporting the body’s natural defences.
These aren’t passing health trends - they’re benefits rooted in centuries of traditional use and now confirmed by modern science.
The Craft Behind True Cinnamon
Like the finest teas, True Ceylon Cinnamon is grown, harvested, and prepared by hand. Our cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura region, where rural artisans begin with a delicate harvest of cinnamon branches - a process that must be done while the bark is still moist.
It takes 7–10 days of expert handling: scraping, rubbing, peeling, and finally quilling the bark into its signature curls. Each step requires patience, precision, and years of experience - a skill passed down through generations.
This isn’t cassia. This is Cinnamomum zeylanicum, native only to Sri Lanka, and still prepared in the same time-honoured way. A true expression of craftsmanship, kindness, and care - from our island’s forests to your cup.
