Why is green tea so popular?
Green tea, like other pure tea comes from the Camellia Sinensis plant. What makes each tea type different is how the tea leaves are processed. Black tea, for example, undergoes a longer oxidation process, which gives its stronger flavour and aroma. Green tea is less processed to preserve the leaves natural chemical composition. So green tea's flavour is more earthy and natural.
Green tea’s reputation as the epitome of healthy beverages is no exaggeration. It's packed with antioxidants and so many minerals that can greatly benefit your health, from weight management to heart health.
Is green tea bitter?
Taste is subjective; most tea lovers enjoy green tea’s raw flavour, and some, mostly who are new to it, find it a bit bitter. This unique taste and the health benefits of green tea come from its chemical compounds such as catechins, chlorophyll and caffeine. One of the most common reasons green tea tastes bitter is when it’s over brewed. So follow our guidelines below to learn how to make green tea taste better.
- Tea bag or loose-leaf green tea?
Tea bags are convenient and easy, especially when you’re busy. If you’re a true tea connoisseur and got a few extra minutes on your hand, try brewing a cuppa with your loose-leaf tea leaves. Dilmah’s green tea range is available in both formats.
- Steep in fresh, hot water
If you want to enjoy the full spectrum of flavours and aromas of green tea, never use boiling water to steep the leaves. Let the temperature of the water drop a couple of degrees, and then pour it on the leaves. You’ll be able to notice the slight savoury note of L-theanine when brewed in low heat. Always make sure to use fresh, hot water – and not water’s that’s been boiled before.
- Use a teaspoon or teabag
The more leaves or tea bags you add, the stronger your brew gets. You don’t need to cloud the subtle, layered flavour notes of green tea by making the brew too strong. We recommend using a teaspoon of tea leaves or one tea bag, per person.
- Don’t over-brew
Green tea and Oolong tea are known as the most delicate tea types, so be careful when you are brewing them. Don’t steep green tea for more than 2-3 minutes, or the tea could get a little bitter.
- Drink while it’s still hot
Unless you are trying a chilled green tea recipe, always have your green tea while still hot. This allows you to taste the earthy flavours of your green tea!
- Add lemon and honey
You can expand the flavour experience by squeezing lemon into the green tea, for a little tang. Also, you can use Dilmah’s green tea infusions for more sophisticated flavours. In case you need a sweetener, honey is healthier than sugar.
- Make iced green tea
Whether you need a quick refresher or a cool-down from the heat, an iced-green tea is sure to brighten your day. Once brewed, add the tea, sweetener and ice into a shaker and shake it for 30-60 seconds and pour it into a glass. Enjoy!
