Dilmah is a Sri Lankan family tea company, founded by Merrill J. Fernando, regarded as the world's most experienced teamaker for championing quality, authenticity and variety in tea. The name Dilmah was coined by combining the first names of Fernando's sons Dilhan and Malik. Today, Dilmah is available in over 100 countries around the world.
Dilmah pioneered the concept of Single Origin Tea in 1988 when the Founder convinced supermarket giant Coles to stock his handcrafted brand of Ceylon tea known as Dilmah; the first producer owned tea brand that offered Ceylon tea that is ‘picked, perfected and packed’ at origin. Unlike the multi-origin blends that monopolised supermarket shelves, Dilmah brought tea that is freshly packed at source and therefore rich in flavour and natural goodness.
At the Dilmah head office in Peliyagoda Sri Lanka, 300,000 square feet of built up space on 4 acres, 1200 staff, over 70 advanced tea packaging machines and stringent quality assurance standards are employed to consistently provide the finest cup of tea. Dilmah is the only fully vertically integrated tea company with ownership of some of Sri Lanka’s finest tea gardens, modern factories, printing and packaging facilities and investments in every segment of the tea industry.
Dilmah is unique; a family company went against industry trends to declare its commitment to authenticity. It is also a part of a philosophy that goes beyond commerce in seeing business as a matter of human service. This is what makes Dilmah the first ethically produced tea. The success of Dilmah is shared with the underprivileged with 15% of Dilmah’s profits used to fund the MJF Charitable Foundation and Dilmah Conservation to stay true to our Founder’s promise of making ‘Business a Matter of Human Service’.
